Hello, from South Beach! I am so thankful to be reunited with the sea and spending time away from the bustling city. Even the frisky seaweed wrapping its long prickly arms around me had me ecstatic to be here. I feel so lucky. As you know, I am an avid reader and inveterate fan of Pablo Neruda’s poetry. I swear each wave that passes upon the shore is somehow a kiss from his soul or a whisper from his heart. This is one of the many reasons why I love coming to the beach as often as I can – I feel connected to his creativity and his love of beauty. The ocean was one of his many passions, a muse that became a major source of his creative inspiration. I just had to find one of my favorite sonnet’s to share with you. Could he be any more lovely? I shared a few photos from the day. They brought yummy rum shots to our room for a complimentary pre-dinner drink… how nice!
Sonnet XXIV (You are the daughter of the Sea)
You are the daughter of the sea, oregano’s first cousin.
Swimmer, your body is pure as the water;
cook, your blood is quick as the soil.
Everything you do is full of flowers, rich with the earth.
Your eyes go out toward the water, and the waves rise;
your hands go out to the earth and the seeds swell;
you know the deep essence of water and the earth,
conjoined in you like a formula for clay.
Naiad: cut your body into turquoise pieces,
they will bloom resurrected in the kitchen.
This is how you become everything that lives.
And so at last, you sleep, in the circle of my arms
that push back the shadows so that you can rest–
vegetables, seaweed, herbs: the foam of your dreams.
